Grounding

What is grounding or earthing? Practices may include tree hugging, meditation, bare feet on the soil solution to clear stress and anxiety! However, there is some evidence that shows that grounding or earthing our energy works to bring you back to the calm.

If you consider that our bodies are energy, our hearts, brain and nervous system work on electric impulses. Messages and communication between our brain and body run with a pulse of electricity via our nervous system carrying information 24/7. So what happens to all the build up of energy when we keep going, we keep driving up our fight/flight responses in our current lifestyle creating more and more stress and energy in our system. Its no surprise that we can feel stressed, stuck in our heads with thoughts going around and around or feel irritated, foggy in the mind or exhausted! We no longer run around barefoot and sometimes we don’t really even see our feet until the summer months! So its safe to say there really isn’t much opportunity to ground our energy unless we are on holiday bare foot on a beach!

Studies now show that just standing on the earth barefoot has amazing health benefits as we draw off the excess energy that is stored in our bodies and energy field. This practice is also known as “earthing”. Basically to ground something means to plug it back into the earth. The earths surface has a negative charge and the atmosphere above has a positive charge. This is why lightning needs to ground and why we need to ground our electrical devices and appliances in our homes.

A healthy dose of taking your shoes off and sitting or standing barefoot in the soil has a powerful and calming effect on the entire nervous system. All of that excess energy and free radicals that have been racing around get to ground into the earth. The effects of this are feeling clearer in your thoughts, connected and calm in your body. There is nothing you need to do other than that, it may seem simple and yes it is! Try this for a week each day for 15mins bringing your focus back to your body and feet and how they feel on the soil. The added benefits of bringing your awareness to your feet is a great mindfulness tool as well as earthing benefits.
